Once every so often, the judges of Project Runway will severely disappoint me, and that just so happened Thursday night. This, however; was a very rare occasion, because I have never disagreed with them on almost every review of their outfits. For this challenge, the contestants had to design an outfit that went with a hat, designed by Philip Treacy (who I absolutely love now). Here is what I thought of their outfits:
A.J.'s outfit did not really match the hat that much. I love the outfit, but the only correlations I can find between the dress and the hat is the collar of the dress and the way it kind of goes up with the end of the hat, and also the shoes, which match the hat.
Andy has become one of my favorite designers because he just hasn't disappointed me with his outfits, yet. This outfit I loved. When the designers had to pick their models, this was my favorite hat Philip Treacy had designed for them. I love the collar of this dress, and the top in general. It has a very 80's business woman feel to it; large top, small bottom, except for the color, which I thought also added to it.
I thought April's design was awful. It made no sense to me, and the worst part was the layered shorts she made for this. I have no idea where she came up with this. I'm not sure of anyone who would wear layered shorts, besides her apparently. The outfit had no relevance to the hat, besides the layered color shorts.
I loved this hat, but I was upset to see Casanova had it. He could have done so much more with this dress, but instead he decided to just go with a black dress. Casanova just seems to be getting lazier with his designs. He does a really good job sewing, I loved the ripple effect in the middle on this dress, but I think he could have added a little more color to it.
This was my absolute favorite outfit for this challenge, but sadly the judges did not like it at all. They could hardly find one thing they liked about this. Personally, I think Christopher's design was one of the few outfits that actually went with the hat. The color matched, the design matched, everything. I just don't understand how this could have ended up on the bottom.
Gretchen's design was just too much for me. I thought the leggings were just awful and the black leather she put on the inside just made it look like she put duck tape on it. In my opinion, this outfit was a hot mess.
Ivy's design was another outfit that had no relevance to it. The only thing I can see that kind of matched was the jacket and the hat, but other than that, the outfit had no relevance to the hat. Maybe if she used different colored shoes it might have helped, but this was not one of my favorites.
Contrary to what the judges thought, I did not think that Kristin's design was that bad. I like her aesthetic for flowy outfits, and I think maybe if she had changed the colors of it, the judges might not have thought it was that bad.
The judges apparently got a hard-on for this outfit, because they would not shut up about how amazing it is. Personally, I didn't think Michael's design was that awesome, and he got to be too much during the discussion with the other designers about how the judges loved hit outfit. I really hope he doesn't turn into the next Gretchen.
I thought Michael's design was pretty good; it wasn't too bad, it wasn't that good. I thought the skirt added the right amount of color to the outfit too. (Also, I think Michael is beating Valerie out for the most boobage shown in this challenge. Valerie is going to have to step up her game if she wants to keep her title).
Mondo has also become another one of my favorite designers. He has this fun, flirty, sort of Tokyo city design aesthetic. I love how he asked the makeup artists to add a mustache to her, it seems very gutsy, but at the same time, I think he knows what he's doing. Even if he gets eliminated in the near future, I think he's going places in the fashion world. I think this outfit had the right amount of balance. Even though the colors are different than the hat, I think it makes the hat pop more.
I'm not really sure where Peach was going with this. The best explanation I can come up with is that she thought maybe the pattern of the dress would go with the hat. The colors didn't really match and neither did the dress and the hat, but I still love Peach.
Valerie's design was another one that had no relevance to the hat/mask. It made no sense to me as to why she would choose red and white, with black zippers when she had a sort of masquerade type mask. Another outfit where there could have been so much more done with it.
